Tycoon-ism: "There are too many people praying for mountains of difficulty to be removed, when what they really need is courage to climb them." - Anonymous
I’m sure most of us at some point in our careers wanted to become rich and famous. There is a story of two medical students from the University of Michigan who, in 1883, received their much deserved degrees. After years of toiling and nights of studying they can finally call themselves doctors. They were two friends who differed in their physical attributes as their values. The one was short and stocky and the other was tall and thin. The short one wanted to start his practice in New York, where according to him, “there are a lot of wealthy people and both of them will be rich in no time at all.” The tall man thought about his friend’s offer but he declined saying that first of all he wanted to be a great surgeon, the very best. And he wanted to serve the people in his hometown as he pursued his dream.
To cut the story short they parted ways. The tall man stayed in his hometown serving his neighbors and together with his younger brother they developed the Mayo Clinic from a smaller clinic founded by their father in 1889. As you may well know, Mayo Clinic now treats the wealthy from all parts of the country. He didn’t have to leave his people; he built his dreams on them. He didn’t chase after wealthy patients, they came to him.
If you love what you do and you’re willing to sacrifice for it, then you’ll never go wrong.
Terrific Tuesday
Tycoon-ism: "Whoever is happy will make others happy too. He who has courage and faith will never perish in misery." - Anne Frank
There was a story about post war Germany during the cold war. This happened when there was a still a Berlin wall. It is important to note that the wall was put up to stop the exodus of the Germans to the Allied controlled area. And so this wall represented the ideological division between post war Communism and Western democracy. In this story, there was an apparent garbage disposal problem o the East side. Some of their more enterprising officials started dumping their garbage on the other side of the wall to the West side. The West side, not to be outdone, retaliated swiftly and decisively. And so on the morning after the garbage was dumped the East side found on their side of the wall all sorts of canned goods and items, neatly stacked, with the message: “You share only what you have.” It is heartwarming to know that even at such an unprovoked attack, we can still muster the courage to share out the goodness of our hearts. Tycoon-ism: The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers. - M. Scott Peck
Only when we lost everything or are threatened to loose everything are we jolted to reconsider what possessions we have that are really important to us. Without this we will always assume that everything we have has the same importance. As long as we are comfortable we become lazy. Only when the doctor says we have hyper tension do we start to watch our weight or exercise. Only when the bank threatens repossession do we try to look for more ways to earn. This does not have to be. It is prudent to live life as if we are on the brink, to keep on sharpening our skills to keep ourselves on track. So the next time you pray your daily prayers, include among them the hope of some trials along the way, better an answered prayer than an unexpected predicament.
